Job Description:

Under the close supervision of a Heavy Equipment Crew Leader, performs a variety of semi‑skilled and skilled work in the operation of light equipment, machinery, and tools used in construction, maintenance, repair, and snow removal activities.

Example of Duties:

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class.)

Operates dump trucks (up to 25 tons), power brooms, forklifts, and jackhammer in construction, maintenance, repair, and snow removal operations.

Checks and services assigned equipment; performs routing maintenance and emergency repairs; reports mechanical problems for shop repairs.

Operates heavier equipment on a limited training basis as assigned.

Operates a variety of mowing equipment in the maintenance of county roads and other facilities.

Trains entry level personnel in the care and operation of assigned equipment.

Performs required manual labor involved in crew construction and maintenance projects such as loading and unloading trucks, cutting trees, and brush, repairing fences and culverts, installing and painting traffic signs, guard rails, and bridges.

Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Education: Completion of high school or equivalent, 

Experience: One year of equipment operation or road work experience

Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge: Some knowledge of Road work and Drainage operations and requirements; Some knowledge of equipment operating principles and practices; some knowledge of the common hazards and safety precautions relating to equipment operations; knowledge of department policies; knowledge of the boundaries of Weber County; knowledge of the safety measures required while working with various tools on the job; knowledge of highway flagging procedures for the safety of fellow employees and the general public.

Skills: Skilled in the operation of assigned equipment.

Abilities: Ability to operate assigned equipment under varying conditions; ability to perform minor equipment maintenance and repair; ability to learn and follow standard  safety practices and procedures common to equipment operation work; ability to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public. Ability to operate motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump trucks (up to 25 ton) utility truck, back-hoe, front-end loader, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches detection devices, mobile and portable radio, phone.

Special Requirements:

Must possess or be able to possess a Utah Class A CDL License with Tanker endorsement, and have a good driving record; Must be willing to be on call depending on weather conditions or emergencies. License must be obtained within 60 days of hire.

Applicants who are selected for employment with Weber County will be required to submit an up-to-date copy of their Motor Vehicle Record from the Utah State License Division prior to starting work.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.  Ninety percent of the work is performed out of doors.
