Under general supervision of an administrative supervisor, provides guidance, support, and up-to-date information to interested pregnant and lactating WIC participants through phone calls, text messaging and face to face in an office setting.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all duties which may be found in positions of this class)
- Follows the “2011 USDA Loving Support through Peer Counseling” training.
- Provides guidance, support, and up-to-date- information on breastfeeding to interested pregnant and lactating WIC participants.
- Demonstrates breastfeeding competence.
- Promotion of breastfeeding through special projects and duties as assigned.
- Familiar with common problems encountered by breastfeeding women.
- Contacts WIC participants at targeted times during pregnancy and the first few months of breastfeeding using, phone calls, emails, texts, or letters
- Provides appropriate anticipatory guidance to prevent the occurrence of breastfeeding problems.
- Refers advance problems to a trained Lactation Educator/Breastfeeding Coordinator.
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Breastfed one or more infants
- Competent to provide breastfeeding advice and information to WIC participants.
- Be enthusiastic about breastfeeding and desire to share that enthusiasm.
- The ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of computer keyboard, email, and other office equipment.
- Prefer current or past WIC participant.
- Bilingual English/Spanish required.
