Job Description:

Under the close supervision of an administrative superior, performs a variety of skilled and semi‑skilled building construction, alteration, and maintenance service and  repair work.

Example of Duties:

Assists the Lead Building Service Worker in determining equipment, tools, and materials required for assigned tasks; serves as a lead worker over other volunteer workers.

Performs a variety of skilled and semi‑skilled painting, carpentry, plastering, masonry, plumbing, metal work, electrical, mechanical maintenance, and related work. Including landscape, lawn mowing, snow removal, and all other needs as required for facility maintanence. 

Hangs doors, lays flooring, installs partitions and drop ceilings, repairs door closures and performs other carpentry work.

Repairs faucets, unstops clogged lines and performs other plumbing work.

Installs and replaces light fixtures, outlets, bulbs, fuses, and performs other electrical work.

Maintains and repairs locks, appliances, boilers, pneumatic controls, heating and refrigeration systems and related mechanical devices; monitors gauges and adjusts controls on equipment.

Paints and redecorates walls, woodwork, furniture, and fixtures.

Welds, brazes, solders, and cuts material using oxy‑acetylene and electric welding equipment to repair existing structures or in the construction of new facilities.

Reads, interprets, and works from sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.

Performs related work as required.

Education and Experience:

Required education, training, and experience:


A.       Education:     High School or equivalent.


B.        Experience:   Two years of diversified experience in building construction, alteration, maintenance, and repair work.


Any equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:


A.       Knowledge:   Considerable knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools, and materials used in a variety of building maintenance functions; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to building maintenance.


B.        Skills: Skill in the use of specialized and common tools and materials of several trades.


C.        Abilities:        Ability, if assigned, to lead and organize the work of others; ability to read, interpret, and work from sketches, diagrams and blueprints; ability to make cost estimates of time and materials; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to perform moderately strenuous manual labor for extended periods of time; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the general public.

Special Requirements:

Must possess or be able to possess a valid Utah Driver's license and have a good driving record.
Must be on call 24 hours a day; must have a telephone.
Must be adaptable to changing work hours as shift hours may be varied.  Working days could include weekends, and holidays; and working hours including early mornings and late nights.
Service workers are required to be on rotating holiday and weekend checks periodically.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
